Community Living and Institutions

What is the problem?

Community services are not funded enough while institutional services are funded too much.

How can it be fixed?

Strike a balance between community and institutional funding by having "money follow the person" to make community a real choice:

• Permanently close and stop paying for empty nursing home and State Center beds and gain immediate savings for community services.
• Close Northern and Southern State Centers within four years and transfer $20 million in savings to community services.
• Provide more funding to community service providers to support people in the community.

People with disabilities now living in nursing homes or ICFs-MR could be served in the community at a savings of $65 million each year
