What We Do
The Council was established by federal and state law to:
- Engage in advocacy,
capacity building and systems change activities that help people with
developmental disabilities to be independent, productive
and included in all facets of community life; and
- Review and advise the Department of Health and Family Services, the legislature and the governor on community budgets and plans for programs affecting persons with developmental disabilities.
Every five years the Council develops a State Plan for systems change which guides all Council activities. The Council also provides a number of publications useful to families and people with disabilities; develops a legislative platform; sponsors an annual awards luncheon to honor media and members of the disability community; and offers grants and contracts to implement State Plan activities.
