Board to Host National Conference

The Wisconsin Board for People with Developmental Disabilities will host the annual NACDD (National Association of Councils on DD) conference this year.

The conference will be held October 6-7, 2008 in Milwaukee. The theme, "Taking Flight: Soaring to New Heights," was inspired by the symbol of Milwaukee--the wing-like roof of the Art Museum. There will be programs and events of special interest to DD Council members and staff, people with DD, family members and others.

A major focus of the conference is supporting people to have real lives and ending the use of institutions. There will be three tracks of information and activities. One track addresses the person with disabilities including self-determination. Another focuses on helping youth with disabilities to "spread their wings". And lastly, the third track looks at policy change.

There are also great opportunities to network and share resources. A resource room, hosted by People First: Wisconsin will feature written materials, videos, micro-business products, and places to sit and chat. On Sunday night just before the conference, people can stroll through "the streets of Old Milwaukee" and a "European Village" while enjoying a variety of buffets at the Milwaukee Public Museum.
